UntitledTown Presents!

Poetry Slam with Cujo

A Program for National Poetry Month

April 27, 2024

1:00-3:30pm

Central Library

Cujo wears many hats, including host of the long-standing poetry open mic "Spoken Word Nights” and youth and adult educator teaching expressive writing.  But poetry has a special place in his heart, and helping people to better understand it - and write it - has become a passion.

Blending styles of Hip-Hop and Slam Poetry, Cujo's "heart-on-your-sleeve" approach to songwriting has been winning fans over to the genre for a decade - and it earned him the title of Wisconsin's Hip-Hop/Rap Artist of the Year (WAMI, 2023).

Poetry Slam description:

A Poetry Slam is a competition involving elements of poetry, theater, performance, and storytelling. Contestants should prepare 2 unique pieces following these guidelines:
< 30 seconds for Round 1
< 2 minutes for Round 2
< 3 minutes for Round 3
All entrants will compete in Round 1 and Round 2, with top performers advancing to Round 3.
________________________
What makes reading poetry or speaking words different from "Slam Poetry"? One key element is feeling. Striving to help the listener feel how you felt writing your piece. Attempting to transport the listener to another headspace so they don't just hear your words but become part of the story. Once we get into each other's heads we might find out that we have more in common than we thought.
